SHORT ANSWER
Clear Grade can grind the stump below grade, reduce selected visible surface roots and quote chip cleanup or haul-away. Standard stump grinding does not remove every underground root. Wood chips can be left on site, spread, or hauled away as an add-on depending on the finish you want.
Grinding vs root excavation
| Scope | Usually included? | Plain-English meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Stump grinding below grade | Yes, when approved | The stump and root flare are ground down so the obstacle is no longer sticking up. |
| Selected visible root grinding | Optional add-on | Surface roots that affect mowing, walking or yard use can sometimes be reduced. |
| Every underground root removed | No | That is excavation, not standard stump grinding. Roots naturally decay over time. |
| Chips left on site | Common | The ground material stays near the stump area and can settle or be reused. |
| Chip haul-away | Optional add-on | Extra labor and disposal are included in the approved scope. |
| Topsoil / seeding prep | Optional add-on | Useful when the goal is a cleaner yard surface or lawn repair. |
What chip option should you choose?
Leave chips
Best when you want the simplest scope or plan to reuse chips as mulch.
Spread chips
Helpful when the chips can be used to cover beds, low spots or rough areas.
Haul chips away
Best when you want a cleaner finish, lawn prep or less leftover material.
How to describe root problems
A root request is much clearer with photos. “Remove roots” can mean several different things, and the scope matters.
- Send photos of surface roots from multiple angles.
- Explain whether roots affect mowing, walking, fencing, planting or drainage.
- Mark any irrigation, utility concerns, edging, patio or hardscape nearby.
- Ask for visible root grinding if you do not need full excavation.
- Ask another excavation provider if you need the entire root system removed.
Related questions
Will roots grow back after stump grinding?
Most cut-tree roots decay over time. Some tree species can produce sprouts from remaining roots, but standard stump grinding is not full root-system excavation.
Can chips be used as mulch?
Often yes, but fresh chips can be bulky and may not fit every planting plan. If you want a cleaner lawn-ready finish, ask for haul-away, topsoil or seeding prep.
